As we mark Volunteer Week, there’s no better time to celebrate the incredible community behind one of Keighley’s most cherished landmarks – the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. With around 700 dedicated volunteers, the heritage railway thrives thanks to the passion and commitment of those who give their time to keep it running.
Stretching five scenic miles from Keighley to Oxenhope, the railway winds its way through the picturesque Worth Valley, following the course of the River Worth and Bridgehouse Beck. It boasts a rich collection of historic steam and diesel locomotives, operating regular train services every weekend, during school holidays, and for special events throughout the year.
Volunteers are the leading force of the railway, taking on a remarkable variety of roles that make the railway experience so special. From driving locomotives and operating the signal boxes to inspecting tickets, guiding visitors, and maintaining the infrastructure, keeping the trains on track – and each one plays a vital part.
“I get tremendous pleasure from volunteering and am very proud of our railway. It makes my day when I get a passenger telling me how much they enjoyed their day on our railway. Our team of volunteers work phenomenally hard, and I am proud of them all.”
Steve, Volunteers at KWVR
Volunteers of all ages can join the railway, and they even have a Young Person’s Group supporting volunteers between 14 and 16 years old, ensuring that skills are passed on to the younger generation.

During National Volunteers Week, we wanted to thank all the incredible volunteers making the town a better place for everyone. These remarkable people give their time and skills to help others throughout the Keighley.
